INTRODUCTION		BUR BEGGARTICKS
Bur Beggarticks (Bidens tripartita) is a dicot weed in the Asteraceae family. In Austria this weed first evolved resistance to Group 5 (Legacy C1 C2) herbicides in 1979 and infests Corn (maize). Group 5 (Legacy C1 C2) herbicides are known as PSII inhibitors - Serine 264 Binders (Inhbition of Photosynthesis at PSll - Serine 264 Binders ). Research has shown that these particular biotypes are resistant to atrazine and they may be cross-resistant to other Group 5 (Legacy C1 C2) herbicides. Rho, Y. D. ; Matsumoto, H. ; Usui, K. ; Ishizuka, K.. 1996. Involvement of foliar absorption and translocation in differential response between Bidens tripartita and B. frondosa to bensulfuron methyl. Weed Research, Japan 41 : 211 - 215.

The response of two Bidens species (B. tripartita and B. frondosa) to bensulfuron-methyl was compared and factors accounting for their differential response were investigated. A greenhouse experiment showed that B. tripartita had greater tolerance to the herbicide than B. frondosa, although the latter had moderate tolerance which was comparable to that of barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli). Absorption of ¹⁴C from above-ground (shoot) tissue following ¹⁴C-bensulfuron methyl application was more rapid in B. frondosa than in B. tripartita. Absorption from the cotyledon was also much greater in B. frondosa, and absorbed ¹⁴C was distributed throughout the shoots of the species. Differential foliar absorption and translocation between the Bidens species may partly explain their differential response to bensulfuron-methyl..

Factors influencing the build-up of resistance to triazines are reviewed with reference to Senecio vulgaris, Chenopodium spp., Amaranthus spp., Ambrosia artemisifolia, Brassica campestris, Stellaria media, Solanum nigrum, Polygonum spp., Galinsoga ciliata, Bidens tripartita, Erigeron canadensis and Cirsium arvense..
