Marshpepper Smartweed (Polygonum hydropiper) is a dicot weed in the Polygonaceae family. In France this weed first evolved resistance to Group 5 (Legacy C1 C2) herbicides in 1989 and infests Corn (maize), and Cropland. Group 5 (Legacy C1 C2) herbicides are known as PSII inhibitors - Serine 264 Binders (Inhbition of Photosynthesis at PSll - Serine 264 Binders ). Research has shown that these particular biotypes are resistant to atrazine and they may be cross-resistant to other Group 5 (Legacy C1 C2) herbicides. Netland, J.. 1996. Weed species and frequency of simazine-resistant populations of Poa annua and Senecio vulgaris in nursery stocks imported to Norway or inland-raised. : 461 - 468.

A survey was carried out during 1994 in Norway of weeds found in imported or inland-raised nursery stocks, with special emphasis on triazine resistance of Poa annua and Senecio vulgaris. In 45 imported and 52 inland-raised samples, 58 and 45 weed species were found, respectively. Uncommon species in inland nurseries were Chenopodium polyspermum, Chamomilla recutita, Solanum nigrum, Polygonum hydropiper, Eupatorium cannabinum, Catabrosa aquatica, Oxalis corniculata, Alchemilla arvensis, Hydrocotyle vulgaris, Epilobium hirsutum, Ranunculus sceleratus and Apera spica-venti. More species and a greater number of weeds were found in balled plants than in container plants. No difference was recorded in the number of weeds between the imported and inland-raised nursery stocks. Triazine resistance in S. vulgaris was found in 8 out of 8 imported samples, compared to only one sample out of 8 of the inland-raised stocks. The corresponding counts for P. annua were 3 out of 22 and 0 out of 14, respectively..
