INTRODUCTION REDROOT PIGWEED
Redroot Pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus) is a dicot weed in the Amaranthaceae family.  In Brazil this weed first evolved resistance to Group E/14 herbicides in 2014 and infests Cotton, and Soybean.   Group E/14 herbicides are known as PPO inhibitors (Inhibition of protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)).  Research has shown that these particular biotypes are resistant to fomesafen and they may be cross-resistant to other Group E/14 herbicides.

Confirmation Tests

Greenhouse trials comparing a known susceptible Redroot Pigweed biotype with this Redroot Pigweed biotype have been used to confirm resistance. For further information on the tests conducted please contact the local weed scientists that provided this information.

Genetic studies on Group E/14 resistant Redroot Pigweed have not been reported to the site.  There may be a note below or an article discussing the genetics of this biotype in the Fact Sheets and Other Literature
